Abstract Flowers & Botanicals in a Colorful Way!

If you would like to learn how to abstract flowers & botanicals in an expressive, colorful way, this class is for you. We will be focusing on creating unique shapes, fresh color and forms using a variety of mark-making techniques. Instead of trying to perfectly replicate the realistic appearance of flowers, we will emphasize the essence of botanicals through expressive brushstrokes, vibrant colors, good values and different shapes through abstraction. We will use reference pictures and/or real flowers and leaves as a jumping off point. In this class, you will also spend time exploring color as a way for you to gain confidence and create color harmony in your paintings. There will be plenty of hands on painting time, brief slideshows of cool artwork and demos too.

    Supplies Students BrinG

    • Photo references of assorted flowers and leaves, and/or books of flowers and  botanicals to work from. Bring several.

    • Paper towels

    • Water & Container (such as old plastic cups or large yogurt containers).  • Apron & Plastic Gloves

    • An easel (tabletop or standing)

    • Palette (Paper palettes that come in pads/sheets are fine or you can use some sort of  plastic palette such as Masterson Sta-Wet Palette which come in sets that includes the  sponge and paper palette in sealable container.

Gray Scale and Value Finder (Optional)

    • White Paper Roll (to be used for mark-making explorations). You may also use large  sheets that come in Pads size 18” x 24”. We will be using this initially used for mark making exploration so you don’t have to use anything expensive.

Note: If you want to use “archival safe papers” for the mark-making exercisesthat you eventually want to collage into your paintings, you may want to consider something like: Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media rolls such as 18” x 20 ft or 18” x 24” pads). However this can be expensive and is not necessary at this point.

Sketch Pad Clip Board and metal clips or something solid like cardboard to tape  paper to. Make sure it’s large enough to fit your large paper.

    • Painters tape

    • 1-2 Canvas Panels or Boards (Larger sizes are best such as 16 x 20 or 20 x 24 or 24 x  30). Also, choose a painting surface that has a “hard” backing such as canvas panels  or boards that have been pre-gessoed. We will be doing several layers of mixed media  with all types of tools so you don’t want to poke a hole in a plain canvas surface).

    • Acrylic paints. Bring the colors you already have that includes: White, Black, Red,  Blue and Yellow. A suggested limited palette is: Titanium White (Bring larger tube of  white), Cadmium Yellow Light (or Lemon Yellow), Cadmium Red Light, Ultramarine  Blue, Cadmium Orange, Quinacridone Magenta (or Alizarin Crimson), Dioxazine Purple,  Phthalo Green, Phthalo Blue, Ivory Black.

Optional: I dont want you to go out and spend a lot of money on paints so bringwhat you already have. Additional colors that I use are: Emerald Green (or Bright AquaGreen), Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Light Blue Violet, Yellow Ochre, Light GreenPermanent, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Naphthol Crimson (or red), Buff (or similar Unbleached Titanium), Fluorescent colors, Olive Green, and any favorite colors you already have.

    • Gloss or Matte Medium

    • Palette knives (various sizes and edges, plastic is fine)

    • Brushes of various sizes. Bring what you have. I use filberts such as #2, #4 #6, #10. • Paint Scrapers in various sizes. ( you can also use old credit cards or gift cards)

Mark-Making Tools such as markers, pencils, water soluble crayons, oil pastels, etc.  What ever you have to make marks with. Be creative.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a container for acrylic and/or oil paint waste and will need to take it home to dispose of properly. It CANNOT be poured down the drains at our new location. Students are also encouraged to wipe brushes clean.

      Unleash your Creativity with Sketchbooking!

Sketchbook Studio is a chance for artists who have considered starting a regular sketchbook practice, and for artists who just want to loosen up and have some fun creating with other artists.

In Sketchbook Studio you will play in your sketchbooks without worrying about creating beautiful artworks. One aim of the class is to quiet the voices in your head that say your art isn’t good enough, and just have fun creating.

Ruby will bring lots of supplies for you to play with. You will only need to bring a few basic supplies, making it easy to get away for an afternoon of art play. Mostly, we will sketch in ink and color our sketches. We’ll use markers, pens, pencils, crayons, watercolor, and ink to explore and experiment with some techniques to help get you started with a doable, regular art practice.

By the end of this 3-week class, you’ll have several new ideas and techniques to keep you busy filling your sketchbook pages. Perhaps you’ll also begin to uncover a path to discovering more about yourself as an artist.

If you have already taken Park Hill Art Club’s Creative Sketchbooking class in July, please join us again. It will be all new exercises.

      SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS TO BRING

Sketchbook, any size, with watercolor or mixed media paper.

A black waterproof ink pen (like Micron or Gelly Roll )or a black ultra fine point marker like Sharpie.

A piece of bubble wrap like the kind that comes in a mailing envelope. (Ruby will have some to share if you can't find any.)

A couple of watercolor brushes. Ruby mostly will use a #4 round and sometimes a 1" flat. Guiry's has some SNAP brushes that are economical.

If you have a watercolor set you want to bring, please do.

A container for water and paper towels or a rag.

Ruby will bring plenty of supplies to share , but you will definitely need a sketchbook (often called "art journal") with decent paper like mixed media or watercolor paper, not paper that is for drawing. Don't buy something new if you already have a sketchbook with paper that can withstand water and it has empty pages. The store Five Below sometimes has cheap art journals that work ok.

      SUPPLIES INSTRUCTOR WILL PROVIDE

      Watercolor brushes

      Tombow water-based markers

Black Gelly Roll Pen and Black Sharpie Ultra Fine Marker

      Caran d'Ache Neocolor II crayons

      Derwent Intense Ink Pencils

Bubble wrap and paper tubes for stamping

Assortment of markers, colored pens, and pencils

      Watercolor Paints

      Pencils and eraser for sketching

      Water container

      Personal sketchbook

      ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

      Problem Solving in Oil Painting!

How do I deal with a composition idea that's almost but not quite good? How do I use color as a design tool, and how do I achieve color harmony in my paintings? Should I even care about color harmony? How do I fix problems in a painting that I was hoping was done (but isn't)?

In this class we'll work on answering questions like these, seeking practical approaches in all cases. We'll start with brief comments by the instructor and a short demo, but plan to spend most of the class time working on your own art. This class is open to all levels. though a little bit of painting experience is helpful. If you're looking for a first-time-ever oil painting class then there are probably some better choices out there. This is an oil painting class, and while many issues are the same in any medium, the instructor will be better able to help you if you're working in oils.

I like to keep the atmosphere in my classes relaxed, friendly and supportive, and normally do not do group critiques at the end of the session. You'll be working on your own painting ideas so bring the ideas that you'd most love to paint!

      SUPPLIES THAT INSTRUCTOR WILL BRING

Students will bring their own supplies. I may have some extras on hand if needed.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a container for acrylic and/or oil paint waste and will need to take it home to dispose of properly. It CANNOT be poured down the drains at our new location. Students are also encouraged to wipe brushes clean.

      SUPPLIES TO BRING

      Please bring:

      - small sketch book: 8" x 10" or smaller

      - pencils of varying hardness. I use 2H, HB and 3B

      - Photo references or other ideas to work from. Bring several!!

      - 1 - 2 canvases. If in doubt bring small ones, like 8" x 10" or 11" x 14". But bring the size you like to work with.

      - Brushes of various sizes. I mostly work with Brights #2, #4 and #6, but I also use a #0 round for small details and an old filbert for getting rid of edges. And a #8 or larger to slather in washes in large shapes. But again if you've got favorites, bring them!

      - Oil Paints. Bring the colors you like to work with but not too many. If you're not sure, I think that a good limited palette is: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Rose OR Permanent Alizarin, Cobalt Blue OR Ultramarine Blue, and a neutral such as Raw Umber or Burnt Umber.

      - An easel (tabletop or standing)

      - Paper towels or rags (I use Viva paper towels)

      - Odorless mineral spirits like Gamsol (NO TURPENTINE PLEASE) and a small container to use them in (I use something called "SILICOIL")

Rodgers gets most of his supplies at Meininger's or Guiry's, but they're largely available online, too.

        About the Instructor

Light and depth are woven throughout Rodgers Naylor's oil paintings, and are always foremost in his mind as he paints. His landscapes reflect his love of exploring the world's natural and cultural wonders. Rodgers studied drawing at The Atelier in Minneapolis and painting at The Art Students League of Denver. The Atelier provided a rigorous approach to accurate drawing while at the Art Students League he learned a loose and painterly style of painting. These influences remain strong, and he enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge with his students. Rodgers exhibits his work in galleries, juried shows, art festivals and other venues. He teaches both workshops and classes, including teaching for several years at the Park Hill Art Club.

          Learn to Blend in Watercolor!

Explore the process of blending watercolors, which is the basis of all good paintings. When you learn the procedure correctly, it’s easy and you do not make mud! This three part workshop will include three different projects, including a structure with landscaping, a vehicle and a fun process of creating rocks in a unique way.

          SUPPLIES TO BRING

Please read carefully. I have students buy the wrong things and it's so disappointing when they cannot return them as they were opened!

Watercolor Paint: Any quality watercolor paint will work just fine. I am known for my colors so if you want to mimic my colors, I am listing my paints that I will be working with in class (and use consistently with all my art). FYI, I find my students end up buying my paints after our first class as they like them so much so if you don't already have your paint, you may want to consider buying off my list!

Guiry’s, & Meiningers carry my paints locally and they are also available on the internet from Amazon, Jerry’s Artarama & Blick Art Materials. These suppliers are good sources for all my supplies.

Dr. PH Martin Hydrous watercolors: I only use the following colors!

These paints come in sets and not all these colors come in one of the sets so I buy individual bottles of only these colors!

          • 5H Quinacridone Magenta
          • 9H Cobalt Violet
          • 2H Gamboge
          • 16H Cobalt Blue
          • 1H Hansa Yellow Light
          • 8H Ultramarine
          • 34H Turquoise Blue

Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed Proof White

Ecoline liquid watercolor: (this is only used in the last project so I will provide this paint for your use. I am listing the product so you can find it later should you like the process.

          • 337 Magenta
          • 508 or 522 Blue

Misket: I use Grumbacher liquid frisket (this is be used only in the last lesson)

Frisk Masking fluid remover (also called glue and residue eraser or adhesive remover) If you have a bottle that is old, I recommend replacing it after testing it on a sheet of paper as it goes bad and will tear your paper when you try to remove it from you project.

Art Ruling Pen: (Used in last class only) Available at Amazon.com. 2 pack Kasteco brand is available for $6.99. I bought a supply and if you want to buy one from me the cost is $3.80.

300 lb Watercolor paper. I use Fabriano 300 lb cold press paper. I do not recommend 140 lb paper for my projects. We will work on 8” x 10” paper so be sure to add an extra 1/2” boarder around your paper so you can mount your finished piece! Guirys and Meinigers carries large single sheets that you can cut down to size or you can buy bulk at Jerry’s Artarama for a good price.

Watercolor brushes: Good quality brushes are highly recommended. If you want to try out brushes and get help you can do so at Guirys or Meininger’s. I use Steve Quiller / Richeson Professional 7000 brushes which are good quality and reasonably priced. They are sold at Jerry’s Artarama off the internet and may be found at Meiningers, I'm not sure. For our classes, we will use round size 4 and 6 and a flat 1” or 1.5” watercolor brush (we can share the large flat brush if you don’t have one as it is only used for our last class).

          Other Supplies:

MASKING TAPE, PENCIL, FINE POINT BALLPOINT PEN, FINE POINT PERMANENT MARKER PEN, ART ERASER, WATER CONTAINER, PALLET TO MIX PAINT AND BACKING BOARD TO TAPE YOUR PAPER TO

I use blue 1” painter masking tape. I use foam board backing board just larger than my sheet of paper. This is available at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I recommend laying wide packing tape strips over the foam board so the masking tape does not tear the form board and can be reused indefinitely! I find larger size triangular white porcelain tasting plate from World Market works the best for hydrous watercolor paints. I use Vanish brand erasers found at all the art supply places listed above. I use Copic Multi Liner size 0.3. There are several great brands out there but the finer the point the better!

Scrubber brush: This is a very valuable tool that I use on almost every painting I do! I use Royal & Langnickel #2 model Z83SC. I ordered several and if you want, you can buy one from me for $4.50. I will demonstrate the magic of this tool.

Pentel Metallic MED Gel Pen: This pen is sold in dual packs with silver or gold or both. I use the silver pen the most. It's super helpful in doing animal whiskers! Michales and Hobby Lobby carry them.

Tracing paper: Saral graphite transfer paper, 12” roll. MAKE USE TO BUY ONLY THE GRAPHITE TYPE. I buy this from Amazon.

Glue residue Eraser: This is used to lift masking fluid off painting once done. I have several for your use or buy from me.

Finetec Pearlescent, F0600 paint set. This set cost around $28 at Amazon. However, I find I use primarily the Olympic Gold (F0621) or Beach gold which can be purchased separately for around $10.00 from Amazon, Meiningers or Guiry’s. This is optional but it really enhances a painting! We will only use this gold paint in our first lesson.

NOTE: I WILL HAVE EXTRA SUPPLIES IF YOU FORGET SOMETHING.

Exploring Oil and Cold Wax Painting

Step into the world of rich color, velvety textures, and expressive layers in this four-week oil and cold wax painting class. Whether you’re brand-new to the medium or looking to expand your artistic voice, this series will guide you through the fundamentals of working with oil paint and cold wax medium—while giving you plenty of space to explore your own creative direction.

Over four sessions, you’ll learn how to:

✨ Build luminous layers using oil and cold wax

✨ Create depth with scraping, incising, veiling, brayering, and glazing

✨ Work with composition, color harmony, and intuitive mark-making

✨ Add texture with tools like pottery ribs, squeegees, brushes, and found objects

✨ Develop a personal visual language through experimentation and play

Each week, we’ll focus on a different technique, gradually building toward a series of small finished works. You’ll discover how to let go of perfection, respond to what’s happening on the panel, and embrace the beautiful unpredictability of the medium. Expect a mix of demonstration, guided time, and individual feedback so you can grow at your own pace.

By the end of the four weeks, you’ll walk away with a set of richly layered paintings, a deeper understanding of the cold wax process, and a toolkit of techniques you can use for years to come.

          Palette Knife Painting with Oils

Add Texture and Loosen Up by Painting with a Palette Knife!

Holly paints primarily with palette knives, enjoying the experience of applying thick paint to make a beautiful work of art. Holly will do a short demo, then answer your questions while you paint.

          Learn how to:

          • Draw a simple sketch to work out your composition
          • Create an underpainting that will help you
          • Look for texture patterns in nature
          • Work in layers - from bottom to top
          • Apply paint in a variety of ways
          • Become comfortable using more paint

          LEVEL

All Levels - a bit of experience painting with oils helps.

          SUPPLIES THAT INSTRUCTOR WILL BRING
