Go Big! Mixed Media Animal Collage

“Go Big! Mixed Media Animal Collage” is an 8-week class designed to help students feel comfortable working on larger canvases while exploring fun and expressive mixed-media techniques. The first 6 weeks is a guided work session finishing their collages and the next 2 weeks are open studio finalizing their piece or can use it as open studio time to receive instructor support on another painting or project. Each student will choose an animal of their choice as their subject and learn how to build a colorful, layered collage from start to finish.

Throughout the course, students will receive one-on-one help from the instructor, along with demonstrations that show each step of the process. We will also experiment with a variety of additional mediums to create richer layers and more dynamic textures, encouraging students to fully explore the possibilities of mixed media.

The focus of the class is to encourage students to take creative risks, work larger than they might be used to, and experiment with color, pattern, and texture. Students will have 6 weeks of guided work sessions to finish their collages and the last 2 week sessions for finalizing their piece production or receive instructor support for other painting or project.

By the end of the 8 weeks, students will complete a large-format mixed-media collage and feel more confident tackling big, ambitious art projects.

    Learn to Blend in Watercolor!

Explore the process of blending watercolors, which is the basis of all good paintings. When you learn the procedure correctly, it’s easy and you do not make mud! Mickey will teach 4 very different watercolor paintings in each week’s workshop as each class has different principles to learn.  Classes with be taught in a step by step approach and all levels of painters are welcome!

    SUPPLIES TO BRING

Please read carefully. I have students buy the wrong things and its so disappointing when they cannot return them as they were opened!

Watercolor Paint: Any quality watercolor paint will work just fine. I am known for my colors so if you want to mimic my colors, I am listing my paints that I will be working with in class (and use consistently with all my art). FYI, I find my students end up buying my paints after our first class as they like them so much so if you don't already have your paint, you may want to consider buying off my list! Guiry’s, & Meinigers carry my paints locally and they are also available on the internet from Amazon, Jerry’s Artarama & Blick Art Materials. These suppliers are good sources for all my supplies.

Dr. PH Martin Hydrous watercolors: I only use the following colors! These paints come in sets and not all these colors come in one of the sets so I buy individual bottles of only these colors!

    5H Quinacridone Magenta

    9H Cobalt Violet

    2H Gamboge

    16H Cobalt Blue

    1H Hansa Yellow Light

    8H Ultramarine

    34H Turquoise Blue

Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed Proof White

300 lb Watercolor paper. I use Fabriano 300 lb cold press paper. I do not recommend 140 lb paper for my projects. We will work on 8” x 10” paper so be sure to add an extra 1/2” boarder around your paper so you can mount your finished piece! Guirys and Meinigers carries large single sheets that you can cut down to size or you can buy bulk at Jerry’s Artarama for a good price.

    Other Supplies:

MASKING TAPE, PENCIL, FINE POINT BALLPOINT PEN, FINE POINT PERMANENT MARKER PEN, ART ERASER, WATER CONTAINER, PALLET TO MIX PAINT AND BACKING BOARD TO TAPE YOUR PAPER TO

I use blue 1” painter masking tape. I use foam board backing board just larger than my sheet of paper. This is available at Michales or Hobby Lobby. I recommend laying wide packing tape strips over the foam board so the masking tape does not tear the form board and can be reused indefinitely!

I find the larger size triangular white porcelain tasting plate works very well for hydrous watercolor paints. They are available at Cost Plus World Market.

I use Vanish brand erasers found at all the art supply places listed above. I use Copic Multi Liner size 0.3. there are several great brands out there but the finer the point the better!

Scrubber brush: This is a very valuable tool that I use on almost every painting I do! I use Royal & Langnickel #2 model Z83SC. I ordered several and if you want, you can buy one from me for $4.50. I will demonstrate the magic of this tool.

Tracing paper: Saral graphite transfer paper, 12” roll. MAKE USE TO BUY ONLY THE GRAPHITE TYPE. I buy this from Amazon.

NOTE: I WILL HAVE EXTRA SUPPLIES IF YOU FORGET SOMETHING.

Exploring Oil and Cold Wax Painting

Step into the world of rich color, velvety textures, and expressive layers in this four-week oil and cold wax painting class. Whether you’re brand-new to the medium or looking to expand your artistic voice, this series will guide you through the fundamentals of working with oil paint and cold wax medium—while giving you plenty of space to explore your own creative direction.

Over four sessions, you’ll learn how to:

✨ Build luminous layers using oil and cold wax

✨ Create depth with scraping, incising, veiling, brayering, and glazing

✨ Work with composition, color harmony, and intuitive mark-making

✨ Add texture with tools like pottery ribs, squeegees, brushes, and found objects

✨ Develop a personal visual language through experimentation and play

Each week, we’ll focus on a different technique, gradually building toward a series of small finished works. You’ll discover how to let go of perfection, respond to what’s happening on the panel, and embrace the beautiful unpredictability of the medium. Expect a mix of demonstration, guided time, and individual feedback so you can grow at your own pace.

By the end of the four weeks, you’ll walk away with a set of richly layered paintings, a deeper understanding of the cold wax process, and a toolkit of techniques you can use for years to come.

    COLOR as a Superpower:
Advanced Color Strategies for Confident, Expressive Painting for Acrylic or Oil Painters

You understand the basics of color, but you still hesitate when choosing palettes ~ or wonder why some paintings sing while others fall flat. In this class, you’ll learn how to make intentional color decisions ~ so your paintings feel cohesive, expressive and confidently resolved. While the focus is on acrylic and oil painting, the color concepts explored are applicable across styles and approaches. Designed for intermediate painters, this course moves beyond formulas and rules to explore color as both a technical and intuitive language. Through guided discussion, visual examples and hands-on studio exploration, you’ll learn how to trust your eye, strengthen your color choices, and use color in a way that supports your personal voice ~ so your paintings feel authentic, emotionally resonant, and fully your own.

In this class, you will learn how to:

-Make intentional color choices rather than second-guessing

-Build strong, flexible palettes that support mood and meaning

-Create harmony, contrast, and visual tension through color

-Understand why certain color relationships work ~ and how to repeat them

-Use color to clarify your personal style and artistic voice

-Strengthen the emotional impact of your paintings

-Paint with greater confidence, clarity and freedom

If you’re ready to move beyond rules and begin using color as a confident, expressive extension of your own artistic voice, this class is for you.

      ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

I've always been a dreamer, a romantic, and an artist. I've been told more than once that I have my 'head in the clouds.' I admit that is true. I see the world differently. Maybe that is why I like watercolor so much. It is fluid and free and has a hard time playing by the rules.

I received a traditional art education at both Michigan State University and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, but I just couldn't seem to follow the rules either. I kept asking, "What if I did this?" Or, "What if I changed that?" Early on I developed a loose style of watercolor painting and over time it has evolved to a very loose style. I start a story with my paintings but then, I want the person looking at them to find their own story and finish what I started. That is how I connect with the collector, by creating a story telling relationship. I want to do more than paint a pretty picture. I want to create art that connects us through thoughts, memories, feelings, and beauty.

Learn Life Drawing with a Live Model!

Learn the basics of life drawing by working from a live model in a welcoming and supportive environment! No life drawing experience is necessary, in this 4 lesson class we will cover:

      - An introduction to observational drawing - understanding that drawing is seeing, how to avoid symbolizing, and how to use various markmaking and measuring techniques to build beautiful, complete drawings quickly and efficiently in a live drawing situation.

      - Capturing the essence of the human figure in brief gestures using charcoals, pastels, or other loose material. Learn to draw in the moment using quick and simplified lines and shapes, focusing on the pose and line-of-action.

-Building the structure of the figure using intercross and geometric shapes to develop an understanding of proportion and form. Improve your understanding of anatomy while also learning a proportional drawing technique that can inform all styles of representational art.

      - Learn expressive mark making using mixed media - a combination of dry materials such as pastels and charcoal with wet media such as watercolors or ink wash to facilitate an understanding of form and value while also creating beautiful and dynamic images.

-NOTE: The price of the class includes the model cost.

Oil Painting: Putting it All Together

Composition...values...shapes...colors...lines...texture...oh my! All are important elements of painting, and we need to consider most of them most of the time, and all of them some of the time...but how do we juggle all of these things to create paintings we like?

In this class we'll work on doing just that, seeking practical approaches in all cases, understanding that the answers will differ from one artist to the next and even from one painting to the next.

We'll start with brief comments by the instructor and a short demo, but plan to spend most of the class time working on your own art. This class is open to all levels. though a little bit of painting experience is helpful. If you're looking for a first-time-ever oil painting class then there are probably some better choices out there. This is an oil painting class, and while many issues are the same in any medium, the instructor will be better able to help you if you're working in oils.

I like to keep the atmosphere in my classes relaxed, friendly and supportive, and normally do not do group critiques at the end of the session. You'll be working on your own painting ideas so bring the ideas that you'd most love to paint!

Students will bring their own supplies. I may have some extras on hand if needed.

        SUPPLIES TO BRING

        Please bring:

        - small sketch book: 8" x 10" or smaller

        - pencils of varying hardness. I use 2H, HB and 3B

        - Photo references or other ideas to work from. Bring several!!

        - 1 - 2 canvases. If in doubt bring small ones, like 8" x 10" or 11" x 14". But bring the size you like to work with.

        - Brushes of various sizes. I mostly work with Brights #2, #4 and #6, but I also use a #0 round for small details and an old filbert for getting rid of edges. And a #8 or larger to slather in washes in large shapes. But again if you've got favorites, bring them!

        - Oil Paints. Bring the colors you like to work with but not too many. If you're not sure, I think that a good limited palette is: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Rose OR Permanent Alizarin, Cobalt Blue OR Ultramarine Blue, and a neutral such as Raw Umber or Burnt Umber.

        - An easel (tabletop or standing)

        - Paper towels or rags (I use Viva paper towels)

          About the Instructor

Light and depth are woven throughout Rodgers Naylor's oil paintings, and are always foremost in his mind as he paints. His landscapes reflect his love of exploring the world's natural and cultural wonders. Rodgers studied drawing at The Atelier in Minneapolis and painting at The Art Students League of Denver. The Atelier provided a rigorous approach to accurate drawing while at the Art Students League he learned a loose and painterly style of painting. Sketchbook Studio II: All New Exercises and Activities!

Sketchbook Studio II is a chance for artists who have considered starting a regular sketchbook practice, and for artists who just want to loosen up and have some fun creating with other artists.

In Sketchbook Studio you will play in your sketchbooks without worrying about creating beautiful artworks. By the end of this 4-week class, you’ll have several new ideas and techniques to keep you busy filling your sketchbook pages. Perhaps you’ll also begin to uncover a path to discovering more about yourself as an artist.

Field Sketching & Introduction to Plein Air Painting

Ever wanted to try "Plein Air Painting", well, bring your sketchbook and your paints and take this intro workshop! You will be learning about Plein air painting or the act of painting outside in the natural world. Plein Air has become very popular enticing studio and amateur artist to find enjoyment in this journey. Whether a professional or novice, this class will teach you time honored techniques and short-cuts learned by painting alongside prominent Chicago plein air artists. My primary medium is Oil, but you can apply these techniques to acrylic and to gouache (pastel, watercolor not recommended). Workshop will be held outside where you will practice these “Plein air fundamentals.”

Artistic Emphasis: I’ll be teaching a framework to achieve the best execution “en plein air”.

            1. Composition — The unity of a painting, design, balance, movement, rhythm.

            2. Craftsmanship — We’ll emphasize fundamentals of drawing, values, skill with the medium, paint handling, presentation.

            3. Challenge — We’ll cover methods artists use to meet the challenges of painting outside. Special techniques to manage weather, fleeting light effects and wet on wet painting.

            4. Color —Well experiment with color harmony, relationships, balance.

            5. Perspective: I’ll emphasize the proper use of single and multiple perspectives where applicable

            6. Compelling — Techniques we use to create irresistible visual impact, make the painting memorable and tell a story.

            Concepts we’ll touch on:

            • Use of Field sketching is a great exercise to help you observe nature more intentionally. You can also plan a painting – solve challenges for future work.

            • Mindset: Relax and step outside your routine

            • Equipment- emphasizing what you need to get started while avoiding a big dollar investment

            • Creating a journey for the viewer: what is the story, who/what are the heroes lead the viewer (even if it’s you) -opt for less, remove obstacles, noise, never block the view

            • Simplification: Choose image and frame it, make tough choices about what is necessary to tell your story. consider drawing a box on your sketchpad,

            • Perspective: create 3-dimensional depth on flat surface. The farther an object is from the drawing plane, the smaller it is. Paths, walls, roads, structures align to a common point in the distance. Heads are all at the same horizontal.

            • Value: how to represent distance using dark and light values and cool and warm palette.

            • Design Principles: like the rule of 3rds and golden ratio- intuitive mathematical concepts used to portray an image

Expressive Florals: Color, Mark-Making & Personal Expression
Paint florals with confidence, color, and your own voice. (Acrylic or Oil)

Expressive Florals: Color, Mark-Making & Personal Expression Paint florals with confidence, color, and your own voice. (Acrylic or Oil)

Let go of perfection and explore flowers in a more expressive, colorful, and personal way.

In this workshop, we’ll use florals and botanicals as a springboard for abstraction, playful mark-making, and confident color. Rather than trying to paint flowers realistically, we’ll focus on capturing their essence—movement, energy, and emotional presence—through fresh shapes, layered marks, strong values, and thoughtful color relationships.

Working from reference photos and/or real still life floral bouquets, you’ll learn how to simplify, exaggerate, and interpret what you see in a way that feels authentic to you. Alongside mark-making and abstraction, we’ll explore color as both a practical tool and an intuitive language—helping you build palettes that feel harmonious, expressive, and emotionally resonant.

            In this class, you’ll:

-Abstract florals into dynamic, expressive shapes

-Use mark-making to create movement and visual interest

-Develop greater confidence with color choices

-Build palettes that support mood, energy, and personal style

-Loosen up and trust your own artistic instincts

There will be plenty of hands-on painting time, demonstrations, and guided discussion designed to inspire without overwhelming.

This class is open to all levels and is suitable for both acrylic and oil painters. Whether you’re new to painting or looking to refresh your approach, florals offer an accessible and joyful entry point for exploring color, mark-making, and personal expression.
