Oil Painting: Putting it All Together

Composition...values...shapes...colors...lines...texture...oh my! All are important elements of painting, and we need to consider most of them most of the time, and all of them some of the time...but how do we juggle all of these things to create paintings we like?

In this class we'll work on doing just that, seeking practical approaches in all cases, understanding that the answers will differ from one artist to the next and even from one painting to the next.

We'll start with brief comments by the instructor and a short demo, but plan to spend most of the class time working on your own art. This class is open to all levels. though a little bit of painting experience is helpful. If you're looking for a first-time-ever oil painting class then there are probably some better choices out there. This is an oil painting class, and while many issues are the same in any medium, the instructor will be better able to help you if you're working in oils.

I like to keep the atmosphere in my classes relaxed, friendly and supportive, and normally do not do group critiques at the end of the session. You'll be working on your own painting ideas so bring the ideas that you'd most love to paint!

    SUPPLIES THAT INSTRUCTOR WILL BRING

Students will bring their own supplies. I may have some extras on hand if needed.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a container for acrylic and/or oil paint waste and will need to take it home to dispose of properly. It CANNOT be poured down the drains at our new location. Students are also encouraged to wipe brushes clean.

    SUPPLIES TO BRING

    Please bring:

    - small sketch book: 8" x 10" or smaller

    - pencils of varying hardness. I use 2H, HB and 3B

    - Photo references or other ideas to work from. Bring several!!

    - 1 - 2 canvases. If in doubt bring small ones, like 8" x 10" or 11" x 14". But bring the size you like to work with.

    - Brushes of various sizes. I mostly work with Brights #2, #4 and #6, but I also use a #0 round for small details and an old filbert for getting rid of edges. And a #8 or larger to slather in washes in large shapes. But again if you've got favorites, bring them!

    - Oil Paints. Bring the colors you like to work with but not too many. If you're not sure, I think that a good limited palette is: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Rose OR Permanent Alizarin, Cobalt Blue OR Ultramarine Blue, and a neutral such as Raw Umber or Burnt Umber.

    - An easel (tabletop or standing)

    - Paper towels or rags (I use Viva paper towels)

    - Odorless mineral spirits like Gamsol (NO TURPENTINE PLEASE) and a small container to use them in (I use something called "SILICOIL") PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a container for oil paint waste and will need to take it home to dispose of properly. It CANNOT be poured down the drains at our new location.

Rodgers gets most of his supplies at Meininger's or Guiry's, but they're largely available online, too.

      About the Instructor

Light and depth are woven throughout Rodgers Naylor's oil paintings, and are always foremost in his mind as he paints. His landscapes reflect his love of exploring the world's natural and cultural wonders. Rodgers studied drawing at The Atelier in Minneapolis and painting at The Art Students League of Denver. The Atelier provided a rigorous approach to accurate drawing while at the Art Students League he learned a loose and painterly style of painting. These influences remain strong, and he enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge with his students. Rodgers exhibits his work in galleries, juried shows, art festivals and other venues. He teaches both workshops and classes, including teaching for several years at the Park Hill Art Club.

Sketchbook Studio II: All New Exercises and Activities!

Sketchbook Studio II is a chance for artists who have considered starting a regular sketchbook practice, and for artists who just want to loosen up and have some fun creating with other artists.

In Sketchbook Studio you will play in your sketchbooks without worrying about creating beautiful artworks. One aim of the class is to quiet the voices in your head that say your art isn’t good enough, and just have fun creating. Your sketchbook can become a space for artistic freedom and exploration without judgment.

Ruby will bring lots of supplies for you to play with. You will only need to bring a few basic supplies, making it easy to get away for a few hours of art play. We’ll use markers, pens, pencils, crayons, watercolor, and ink to explore and experiment with some techniques to help get you started with a doable, regular art practice.

By the end of this 4-week class, you’ll have several new ideas and techniques to keep you busy filling your sketchbook pages. Perhaps you’ll also begin to uncover a path to discovering more about yourself as an artist.

Expressive Florals: Color, Mark-Making & Personal Expression
Paint florals with confidence, color, and your own voice. (Acrylic or Oil)

Expressive Florals: Color, Mark-Making & Personal Expression Paint florals with confidence, color, and your own voice. (Acrylic or Oil)

Let go of perfection and explore flowers in a more expressive, colorful, and personal way.

In this workshop, we’ll use florals and botanicals as a springboard for abstraction, playful mark-making, and confident color. Rather than trying to paint flowers realistically, we’ll focus on capturing their essence—movement, energy, and emotional presence—through fresh shapes, layered marks, strong values, and thoughtful color relationships.

Working from reference photos and/or real still life floral bouquets, you’ll learn how to simplify, exaggerate, and interpret what you see in a way that feels authentic to you. Alongside mark-making and abstraction, we’ll explore color as both a practical tool and an intuitive language—helping you build palettes that feel harmonious, expressive, and emotionally resonant.

      In this class, you’ll:

-Abstract florals into dynamic, expressive shapes

-Use mark-making to create movement and visual interest

-Develop greater confidence with color choices

-Build palettes that support mood, energy, and personal style

-Loosen up and trust your own artistic instincts

There will be plenty of hands-on painting time, demonstrations, and guided discussion designed to inspire without overwhelming.

This class is open to all levels and is suitable for both acrylic and oil painters. Whether you’re new to painting or looking to refresh your approach, florals offer an accessible and joyful entry point for exploring color, mark-making, and personal expression.

        SUPPLIES TO BRING

Please read carefully. I have students buy the wrong things and its so disappointing when they cannot return them as they were opened!

Watercolor Paint: Any quality watercolor paint will  work just fine. I am known for my colors so if you want  to mimic my colors, I am listing my paints that I will be  working with in class (and use consistently with all my  art). FYI, I find my students end up buying my paints after  our first class as they like them so much so if you don't  already have your paint, you may want to consider buying  off my list!

Guiry’s, & Meinigers carry my paints locally and they are  also available on the internet from Amazon, Jerry’s  Artarama & Blick Art Materials. These suppliers are good  sources for most supplies.

Dr. PH Martin Hydrous watercolors: I only use the  following colors! These paints come in sets and not all  these colors come in one of the sets so I buy individual  bottles of only these colors!

        5H Quinacridone Magenta

        9H Colbalt Violet

        2H Gamboge

        16H Cobalt Blue

        1H Hansa Yellow Light

        8H Ultramarine

        34H Turquoise Blue

Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed Proof White

300 lb Watercolor paper. I use Fabriano Artistico 300

lb weight cold press paper. I do not recommend 140 lb

weight paper for my projects. We will work on 8” x 10”

paper so be sure to add an extra 1/2” boarder around

your paper so you can mount your finished piece!

Guirys and Meinigers carries large single sheets that

you can cut down to size or you can buy bulk at Jerry’s

        Artarama for a good price.

Watercolor brushes: Good quality brushes are highly

recommended. If you want to try out brushes and get

help you can do so at Guirys or Meininger’s. I use Steve

Quiller / Richeson Professional 7000 brushes which are

good quality and reasonably priced. They are sold at

Jerry’s Artarama or Rex Art on the internet. For our

classes, we will use round size 4 and 6 and

        Other Supplies:

MASKING TAPE, PENCIL, FINE POINT BALLPOINT PEN,  FINE POINT PERMANENT MARKER PEN, ART ERASER,  WATER CONTAINER, PALLET TO MIX PAINT AND  BACKING BOARD TO TAPE YOUR PAPER ON TO.

I use blue 1” painter masking tape. I use 1/4” foam  board backing board just larger than my sheet of  paper. This is available at Michales or Hobby Lobby. I  recommend laying wide packing tape strips over the  foam board so the masking tape does not tear the form  board and can be reused indefinitely!

I find larger size triangular white porcelain tasting  plate from World Market works the best for hydrous  watercolor paints as a pallet.

I use Vanish brand erasers.  I think they are getting  harder to find by Amazon still carries them.

I use Copic Multi Liner size 0.3. there are several great  brands out there but the finer the point the better!

Scrubber brush: This is a very valuable tool that I use on  almost every painting I do! I use Royal & Langnickel #2  model Z83SC. I ordered several and if you want, you can  buy one from me for $4.50. I will demonstrate the magic of  this tool.

Pentel Metallic MED gel Pen: This pen is sold in dual  packs with silver or gold or both. I use the silver pen the most. Its super helpful in doing animal whiskers! I use to get them at Hobby Lobby but they no longer carrie them. I last  ordered them from Amazon.

Tracing paper: Saral graphite transfer paper, 12” roll.  MAKE USE TO BUY ONLY THE GRAPHITE TYPE. I buy this  from Amazon.

Finetec Pearlescent, F0600 paint set. This set cost  around $28 at Amazon. However, I find I use primarily the  Olympic Gold (F0621) or Beach gold which can be  purchased separately for around $10.00 from Amazon,  Meinigers or Guiry’s. This is optional but it really enhances  a painting! We will only use this gold paint in our lessons.

NOTE: I WILL HAVE EXTRA SUPPLIES IF YOU FORGET SOMETHING.

        Woodcut Printmaking without a Press

Goal: for participants to produce an edition(s) of 5 or more woodcut prints from their sketch or drawing.

Instruction: Participants will be introduced to wood and paper types, and their advantages and disadvantages for woodcut printmaking. We will also discuss carving tools, inks, brayers, and tools for making the impression on the paper.

NOTE: Safety is a top priority. Participants will use “bench hooks” to stabilize the block while gouging out white areas.

Razor-sharp Japanese carving tools are available for use, and soft, smooth- grained shina plywood is provided to carve the image in. The cost of ink, paper, the first woodblock, and supplies are covered in the fee.

Participants must bring a reference drawing for their woodcut print to be produced.

Participants will transfer their drawing to the block, carve the image into the block, ink the block, and print it, using a hand burnisher.

There will be brief demos of steps of the process each class period, to familiarize participants with tried-and-true details of making handsome woodcut prints.

        About the Instructor

Michael Keyes is a woodcut printmaker and oil painter with a BFA from Wright State University, and an MFA from Ohio State University.

In woodcut printmaking, he is challenged by composing black and white shapes into active, impactful images. His woodcuts relay visual stories—either a simple story of a breathtaking landscape, or a complex story of people helping people, as in activities in early days of the Covid 19 pandemic. The addition of brisk color, produced with oil-based inks, brings a special liveliness to some of his works.

He has taught woodcut printmaking at Park Hill Art Club, when the club met at Park Hill United Methodist Church, before COVID.

He teaches woodcut printmaking at Art Students League of Denver.

He was awarded “Best of Show” at the 2021 National Arts Program Front Range Exhibition, and “First Place” in the Studio Work Category, at the Escalante Canyons Art Festival in 2024, among other recent awards.

She takes advantage of the thickness of the paint to create vibrant, painterly, textural works of art.  The knife allows quick mixing and application, with no stopping to switch to brushes, and no need for solvents.  Once students have experienced knife techniques, they can decide how much of their paintings will be covered with knife strokes.

        Learn how to:

        • Draw a simple sketch to work out your composition
        • Create an underpainting that will help you
        • Look for texture patterns in nature
        • Work in layers - from bottom to top
        • Apply paint in a variety of ways
        • Become comfortable using more paint

        First Class:

Holly will do a demo painting while explaining her process: pencil sketch, panel sketch, underpainting, then palette knife.  Students are free to watch, or work on their own painting along with her.  She painted the two landscapes above in her March classes.

        Remaining classes:

Students will bring their own reference photos and try out the process.  Meanwhile, Holly will start another painting, answer students’ questions about theirs, and offer tips along the way.  Artists can finish their paintings at home, and bring them in the following week for review, if they like.

        LEVEL

All Levels - a bit of experience painting with oils helps.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a container for acrylic and/or oil paint waste and will need to take it home to dispose of properly. It CANNOT be poured down the drains at our new location. Students are also encouraged to wipe brushes clean.

        SUPPLIES TO BRING

        • Reference pictures for your painting. Any type of scene you’d like.
        • Panels or canvases: small size, from 8x10 to 12x16. Recommend Ampersand Gessobord.
        • Oil paint: bring the paint you have, and your favorite palette colors. Recommend a Warm and Cool of each primary. I prefer Gamblin 150ml tubes. These are the colors I use:
          • Cad Yellow Light
          • Cad Yellow Medium
          • Cad Red Light
          • Quinacridone Violet (Alizarin Permanent also works)
          • Ultramarine Blue
          • Cerulean Blue Hue
          • Cobalt Blue
          • Titanium White
          • Chromatic Black (Gamblin)
        • Palette knives: bring the ones you have. Recommend Teardrop and Diamond shape in different sizes, and one with a square edge, about ½” wide.
        • Wet panel carrier
        • Brush for initial drawing: recommend size 4 or 6 filbert.
        • Portable easel and palette
        • Odorless paint thinner for drawing and underpainting: recommend Gamsol. If you don’t like to use thinner, you can use colored pencils to sketch on your panel, and paper towels to rub on the paint. Acrylic paints also work well for underpaintings.
        • Disposable gloves
        • Paper towels
        • Plastic bag for used paper towels
        • Small plastic paint cups for storing unmixed paint between sessions. About 1” round and ¾” deep. One for each color on your palette. I use Artist’s Loft from Michaels because they seal well.

Sketchbook Doodles in (mostly) Black and White

Sketchbook Doodles is a chance for artists who have considered starting a regular sketchbook practice, and for artists who just want to loosen up and have some fun creating with other artists.

In this class you will play in your sketchbooks without worrying about creating beautiful artworks. One aim of the class is to quiet the voices in your head that say your art isn’t good enough, and just have fun creating. Your sketchbook can become a space for artistic freedom and exploration without judgment.

We’ll use mostly black and white markers and pens to create interesting figures and abstracts to help get you started with a doable, regular art practice.

By the end of this 4-week class, you’ll have an extensive inventory of personal doodles to help keep you busy filling your sketchbook pages. Perhaps you’ll also begin to uncover a path to discovering more about yourself as an artist.
