Artist Summer Camp #4: Gouache and India Ink Workshop-Discover the Art of Bold Expression

Unleash creativity through the dynamic combination of gouache and India ink. This immersive, hands-on workshop explores how these two powerful mediums interact to create striking contrasts, layered textures, and expressive compositions—perfect for artists of all levels.

What to Expect

  • Dynamic Resist Technique: Learn how to apply gouache to create a dynamic andunexpected resist technique that will shake up any practice, whether for beginner orprofessional painters.
  • Highlights and Shadows: Discover how to use gouache for luminous highlights and India ink for rich shadows and depth, achieving a dramatic tonal balance.
  • Abstract Backgrounds: Explore how to create expressive, abstract backgrounds using the India ink and gouache technique, then learn how to draw and paint foregrounds back into the work for a cohesive composition.
  • Gouache as Resist: Gain command of using gouache as a resist medium, learning how it interacts with ink to produce layered, textural effects.
  • Medium History: Learn about the history of gouache and India ink and how these traditional materials can be integrated into any modern art practice.
  • Personal Project: Complete an original 11x17" painting under expert guidance.

LEVEL

Any. Ideal for artists, illustrators, designers, and anyone eager to expand their painting techniques. No prior experience required—just curiosity and enthusiasm.

SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS TO BRING

  • PAPER: 2 sheets of 140lb watercolor paper (8" x 10" or larger preferred) 
  • GOUACHE: (traditional DESIGNER"S GOUACHE ONLY! NOT acrylic): Titanium white and at least two primary colors. I prefer Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton 
  • BRUSHES: Watercolor: 1” flat, and a #8 or #10 Round 
  • Drafting tape 
  • Spritzer bottle 
  • Towel or cloth (no paper towels, please) 
  • A water container 
  • Paint Palette 
  • Ideas or images you would like to paint

  • Hair dryers 
  • Graphite Paper 
  • Cheesecloth 
  • Saran Wrap 
  • Lace 
  • Gouache (including metallics)
  • Brushes 
  • Painter's tape 
  • Gator boards 
  • Colored pencils

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Bonnie Stolzmann is a distinguished fine artist and illustrator based in Denver, renowned for her dynamic and engaging approach to both art and education. With a passion for inspiring creators of all ages, she has taught art classes that empower students to unlock their full potential through hands-on exploration of new materials and techniques.

Her exceptional scientific illustrations have been published in collaboration with The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, The University of California, Harvard University, and The Jepson Herbarium. Additionally, Bonnie’s artwork has been showcased internationally, earning prestigious awards and recognition.

A firm believer in fostering a supportive and innovative learning environment, Bonnie creates a classroom atmosphere where students feel encouraged to take creative risks, experiment freely, and grow as artists.

Whether in the studio or the classroom, her dedication to both artistic excellence and education makes her an inspiring mentor.
